Microsoft is working to significantly improve the desktop side of its modern operating system and according to a new report, the company is preparing some pretty big changes in this regard.

Windows 9 might come with options to disable the Modern UI completely, as existing builds include features that lets users toggle the touch-optimized interface on and off.

The news come via Neowin which is reporting that Threshold, supposedly the internal codename of Windows 9, is currently in development and early preview versions of the operating system are already up for testing for a limited number of Microsoft engineers.

According to people close to the matter, Windows 9 is very likely to see daylight in April 2015, and it might seem like Microsoft is planning to offer it completely free of charge to Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows 8.1 Update users.

Windows 9 is obviously expected to come with quite a lot of improvements, including a new Start menu which, among others, would also integrate several customization options to allow users to change its looks and functionality.

Microsoft is yet to break the news on Windows 9, but a preview version might be on the stage of the Worldwide Partner conference kicking off on July 13.
