Windows 9 is one of the hottest topics these days among Microsoft fanatics, especially because so many rumors are pointing to the return of the Start Menu and other major improvements.

A recent report that reached the web indicated that Windows Phone 9 could dump the Metro UI in the favor of a redesign interface, hinting that Microsoft is planning even more significant changes to the upcoming operating system.

A few months ago, we’ve heard that Windows 9, as in the desktop version, could also move away from the Modern UI, in an attempt to win users’ hearts and provide them with a much more familiar working environments.

As you can see, all reports are in the favor of a redesigned UI, but there are some things which clearly show that the Modern UI is here to stay.

First of all, Microsoft plans to merge Windows Phone and Windows RT and install the resulting operating system on both smartphones and tablets. As a result, the Modern UI is the only way to go and even though Microsoft might indeed implement some major changes, Metro would still be the core design.

At the same time, Microsoft is also said to be planning multiple versions of the upcoming Windows release, one of which would even come with a Start Menu.

This is actually the only scenario where a Metro-less operating system is possible, even though we’re pretty sure that Microsoft would find a way to implement both a Start Menu and a Modern UI in the future OS release.

Steve Ballmer has said it several times and there’s no reason not to trust the man. The Modern UI has only debuted in Windows 8 and will get lots of improvements as time passes by, so do not expect such a dramatic change, such as a complete retirement, anytime soon.
