Another day, another report about the upcoming Windows 9 operating system. Microsoft has remained completely tight-lipped on this project, but sources close to the matter are now revealing that Windows 9 could come with virtual desktops, which would basically boost desktop productivity and provide users with an option to better organize the running apps.

Neowin writes that this feature is already available in testing builds of Windows 9, but what’s more important is that it appears to be very similar to the virtual desktop option that’s included in Ubuntu.

While it’s pretty hard to make a virtual desktop feature very different right now since the purpose of such a tool is pretty much obvious, it appears that Microsoft is finally bringing this functionality in Windows, after years of requests coming from users looking for better desktop productivity.

Basically, the goal of this feature is to provide users with multiple desktops that would work pretty much like the standard one, but each would run its own apps. This could help users stay organized, allowing consumers to quickly switch between desktops to access specific programs and continue their work.

At this point, it appears that Windows 9’s virtual desktop option can be accessed with the help of a button on the taskbar, but the aforementioned source says that this could change in future builds.

Keyboard shortcuts that allow users to switch from one desktop to another are also expected to be offered and so are touch gestures specifically designed for tablets.

At this point, Microsoft obviously refuses to comment on anything that’s related to Windows 9, but seeing virtual desktops being offered to users as part of this release shouldn’t be surprising at all.

Windows adopters have been asking for this particular feature for years, but Microsoft has actually delayed the introduction of multiple desktops in its operating system.

Now the time has come and Windows 9, which is expected to be a game changer for Microsoft, could get it, alongside a bundle of other major features, including a modern Start menu, options to run Metro apps on the desktop, and even a PC version of Cortana that would allow users to perform a number of tasks with voice commands.

As usual, do not forget that all of these are just rumors and do not be surprised if Microsoft actually denies them. As is the case with such early development features, they might or might not make it to the final product.
