A special Microsoft campaign states that all those who purchase a Windows 7 computer after June 2 are allowed to migrate to Windows 8 for $14.99 (€11.5), while users of previous Windows versions need to pay $39.99 (€30) for the same upgrade.

The upgrading process, which is performed with the help of the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, previously required users to input the name and the manufacturer of the Windows 7 computer manufacturer and, after a quick check, it automatically started downloading Windows 8.

It turns out, however, that Microsoft has changed this routine to also ask users to input the Windows 7 product key, according to a report by Neowin.net.

Although the company is yet to confirm this publicly, it could be just another security measure to make sure that users have actually purchased a new computer running a genuine Windows 7 copy.

Looked at the CDN $ 14.99 option and received a code from MS to upgrade to Win8 Pro. When I ran the Upgrade Evaluator it gave me a list of 7 incompatible apps that I have that either would require me to go to the Hardware provider to get an Win8 fix or change up the hardware. In addition Win8 Pro does not bundle Windows Media Centre into the main OS any longer and now has to be purchased for Approx $ 69.99. I found this inconvenient and a few levels so I did not upgrade.
