Windows 8 continues its slow growth, but Microsoft’s modern operating system still remains way behind the current leaders of the OS market.

Statistics provided by market researcher StatCounter indicate that Windows 8 is currently the third most-used operating system in the world, with a share of 7.65 percent of the first 15 days of October.

Windows 7 obviously leads the charts with 51.61 percent, while Windows XP comes second with 20.36 percent.

In the meantime, Microsoft is making the final adjustments to Windows 8.1, the first Windows 8 update that’s supposed to give the modern OS a new chance to impress, especially because it has until now failed to gain traction.

Windows 8.1 will come with a long list of improvements, including a new Start button, Start screen improvements, and Internet Explorer 11.
