While Microsoft claims that Windows 8 is quickly growing up in popularity, new figures provided by Net Applications indicate that Microsoft’s latest operating system is only increasing its market share at a rather slow pace.

According to stats collected in February 2013, Windows 7 is still the top operating system in the world with a market share of 44.55 percent, followed by Windows XP with 38.99 percent and Windows Vista with 5.17 percent.

Windows 8, the new Windows contraption introduced by Microsoft in October 2012, is only the fifth in Net Applications’ rankings with a market share of 2.67 percent, up from 2.26 percent in January 2013.

Microsoft claims that Windows 8’s early update is in line with the one recorded by Windows 7 after launch, but the company hasn’t provided any other statistics beside the 60 million units sold in the first two months on the market.
