Sales continue to fall and fall despite advancements to the OS

Microsoft, and pretty much every PC maker, hoped that Windows 8 would rekindle demand for computers back when it was released in August, 2012, but it's been more than a year and still no progress.

Even Windows 8.1, the one that added a start button among other things, didn't have what it took to shake things up again.

In the end, as IDC has again confirmed, the PC market is simply losing customers to smartphones and other gadgets.

One can only wonder how things will go next year, when wearable smartwatches and augmented reality headsets will come out to play.

Add to that the lack of reasons to repair an older system (since even Skyrim plays well on 4 GB of DDR2, not DDR3), and you're at an impasse.

2-in-1 devices might help make things better for a while, but they could as easily end up lugged with tablets instead of PCs.
