I’m seeing growing excitement on a possible leak of Windows 8 later today or by the end of this weekend on a variety of sites, and I do understand that the first bits of Windows 7’s successor are awaited with bated breath. There are quite a few users absolutely ready to jump the gun and grab an early preview of Windows 8, even before Microsoft starts sharing the first public development milestone, which will most likely be the Beta Build.

However, until this point in time, an actual Windows 8 leak has not happened.

Yet, I have seen a few sources claiming the contrary and spreading fakes. So my advice is to be careful about what you download, and especially today, seeing how it’s April 1st, and all.

Microsoft has reportedly started working on Windows 8 Milestone 3, and is gearing up for the first public preview.

Apparently, M3 will be followed by the Beta Build, which should ship to a testing audience as broad as possible, just as it was the case with Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

So far, the Redmond company kept leaks down to a minimum, with just minor details of the next iteration of Windows making their way to users.

Helping this is a new, tougher stance against leaks that the software giant has taken, including by making sure that every Windows 8 early adopter received the following message:

“Unauthorized use or disclosure in any manner may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment (in the case of employees), termination of an assignment or contract (in the case of contingent staff), and potential civil and criminal liability.”

Fact is that a leak of Windows 8 is indeed inevitable; it’s only a case of ‘when’ rather than of ‘if.’
