Windows 8 isn’t quite the most successful Windows to date, but it keeps gaining traction every month, according to data provided by market researcher StatCounter.

Figures for the first 15 days of this month show that Windows 8 is now the fourth most popular operating system across the world, but still behind Mac OS X.

At this point, Windows 7 is still number one with 51.96 percent, followed by Windows XP with 20.42 percent. Mac OS X comes third with 7.32 percent, while Windows 8 is very close with a market share of 6.89 percent.

Windows 8’s share is very likely to grow bigger in the coming months, as Windows 8.1, its first major update, is just around the corner. If the same trend is maintained for a few more weeks, Windows 8 should become the third top OS in the world very soon.
