Windows 8 isn’t quite the most appealing Microsoft operating system ever released, but it continues to gain traction now that its first-ever update is just around the corner.

Speaking about the way Windows 8 was developed, Jeff Kagan, technology industry analyst, told ChannelProSMB that Microsoft actually created its modern operating system to tackle the changing IT world, as the popularity of touch-capable devices is increasing.

“The mistake [Microsoft] made with Windows 8 is that they saw the world was changing and they saw they had to make some changes to lead. But they didn’t have any consideration for their existing customer base,” Kagan was quoted as saying.

At this point, Windows 8 is installed on approximately 8 percent of computers worldwide, which makes it less popular than both Windows 7 and Windows XP.
