Steve Ballmer is probably smiling right now, as Windows 8 has officially became the number one product in the “Software” category on Amazon.

This means that Microsoft’s upcoming operating system is now a bestseller, even though its official unveiling only takes place next week.

Microsoft announced pricing and started the preorder program for Windows 8 last week, but the interest in Windows 8 appears to be higher than ever. The first units will be shipped after the October 26 debut, but several retailers across the United States are already selling boxed copies of the OS.

Windows 8 is dramatically changed from the previous versions, but Microsoft emphasizes that it still has the power to attract millions of buyers before year end.

To make sure everything goes as planned, the Redmond-based technology company has prepared a $1.8 billion (€1.3 billion) marketing campaign to advertise Windows 8 across the United States and the rest of the world.

According to Microsoft’s very own estimates, this marketing push is expected to generate around 1.6 billion impressions in the United States, with five impressions for every single person living in the country.

The first advertisement has already been launched ahead of the public debut slated for October 25 in New York. Microsoft will use the same launch event to introduce the Surface tablet, the company’s very own device that features a special version of the new operating system.
