Windows 8 got to see daylight more than 5 months ago, but its market share is increasing at a rather slow pace, despite Microsoft’s efforts to promote some of its key features.

According to the latest stats provided by market research firm StatCounter for the month of April, Windows 8 has finally reached a market share of 4.64 percent, most likely thanks to the fact that we’re getting closer to the Windows 8.1 launch projected to take place this summer.

Windows 7 continues to top the rankings with a whopping 54.28 percent, followed by Windows XP and Mac OS X with 21.48 and 7.01 percent, respectively.

If Windows 8 continues to gain users at the same pace, expect it to overtake Windows Vista and to go after Mac OS X in just a few months, most likely just ahead of the debut of its first major upgrade.
