Windows 8 may not be the most successful Windows version ever released by Microsoft, but the operating system is slowly increasing its market share, especially thanks to the upcoming launch of Windows 8.1.

New StatCounter data for the first week of April shows that Windows 8 has finally reached a share of 4.51 percent, becoming the fifth most popular OS on the market after Windows 7, Windows XP, Mac OS X and Windows Vista.

Windows 8 is slated to receive the first major update as soon as this summer, as Microsoft is reportedly working on a major refresh that would bring several improvements.

Internally codenamed Windows Blue, the upcoming makeover might be called Windows 8.1, especially because it would be specifically addressed to Windows 8 users who’d like improved stability and better performance.
