Starting February 1, a Windows 8 Pro upgrade is sold for $199.99 (€148.02), except for Australia where users have to pay no more, no less than $420 (€310) for a single license.

As you probably know, Microsoft had a special launch discount rolled out just after the new operating system came to be on October 26, but starting this month, the company switched back to its original pricing schedule.

Surprisingly however, Australian users are forced to pay almost twice as much for a Windows 8 Pro upgrade, while the standard version comes with a price tag of $149.99 (€111).

Back in 2009 when Windows 7 was officially introduced to the world, a non-pro version upgrade was sold for $119.99 (€88.81) in the United States and for $157 (€116) in Australia.

Of course, Microsoft isn’t the only company that’s “overcharging” users in Australia, but judging by users’ reaction to Windows 8 pricing, sales of the operating system are very likely to be affected.
