Windows 8 officially went live on October 26, 2012 and, even if Microsoft expected the number of apps in the Store to skyrocket soon after general availability, the overall count is clearly below the company’s expectations.

At this point, there are more than 45,000 apps available in the Store, according to MetroStore Scanner, an unofficial source that tracks Windows Store submissions, with only a few hundreds entries approved every day.

Microsoft initially estimated that more than 100,000 apps would be approved by February 1 but, as we can all see right now, the company hasn’t even managed to reach half of this goal.

The good news, on the other hand, is that some important companies have already confirmed plans to develop Windows 8 applications, including Twitter, the social networking platform that can be currently used via unofficial clients or with the web-based version.
