Microsoft has rolled out a new set of improvements for the Mail app

Microsoft has just released a large update for the Windows 8.1 Mail app, implementing not only bug fixes and performance improvements, but also several new options.

As you probably know, the Mail app has received a complete makeover in Windows 8.1, getting a new interface, as well as improved features and better support for touch-capable devices.

The update released today is supposed to make the whole experience with the app even better by implementing several new options on both desktop and tablet versions of Mail.

Starting with this new version, you can use the sweep tool to clean up your Outlook.com inbox and get a more organized account, as social updates and newsletters are now filed away automatically.

You can now drag and drop messages into filters, and select multiple emails at the same time by tapping on the adjacent checkboxes. What’s more, users are allowed to create automatic replies in case they are away and get info about the sender by tapping on their name.

Some of these features were already there in the Mail app, but given the fact that Microsoft included them in the release notes is probably a sign that the company has actually improved their performance. As a result, the overall email sending and reading experience should now be faster on both touchscreens and desktop computers.

The Mail app is pre-installed on all copies of Windows 8.1 and is available on Windows RT 8.1 as well, thus giving users the power to check their emails without closing the Modern UI.

At the same time, users who decided to move to Windows RT 8.1 are also provided with Outlook RT 2013, a desktop email client that’s available as part of the Office 2013 productivity suite. Still, as compared to the default Mail app, Outlook is only offered in the desktop side of the OS.
