Windows 8.1 Update was officially launched yesterday, but plenty of users are still experiencing issues downloading it, with many claiming that getting it from Windows Update is impossible for the time being.

According to some posts on Microsoft’s Community forums, Windows 8.1 Update fails to install with error code 80070020, without any other specifics provided to users.

Microsoft hasn’t yet released a fix for users experiencing issues with Windows 8.1 Update, but those who can’t still get it right now can always manually download the pack and deploy it using the instructions we provided yesterday.

Here’s what one of the users who have problems with Windows 8.1 Update installation wrote on the Microsoft support forums:

“I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now. I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day. Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window,” the user explained.

“The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s. After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020. From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.”

Windows 8.1 Update comes with lots of improvements for desktop computers, including options to pin Metro apps to the taskbar, but also with a revised Start screen that makes it easier for users to shut down or reboot their computers. The new pack of improvements is usually delivered to users via Windows Update, but given the fact that so many people are actually experiencing issues with the installation process, getting it manually seems to be the only option.

At this point, it’s not yet clear how many users are actually affected by these problems, but it appears that more and more Windows 8.1 adopters are unable to upgrade their machines to the new OS version.

If you’re also experiencing issues with Windows 8.1 Update installation, make sure that you are running a fully up-to-date copy of Windows 8.1, as the new version requires several updates to be deployed on your computer. Also, keep in mind that Windows 8.1 Update 1 installation could take a while, as the package is more than 700 MB in size and obviously needs some time to deploy all files.
