Windows 8.1 Update 1 was expected to bring back the Start Menu and thus make Microsoft’s modern operating system a bit more user-friendly.

It turns out, however, that Microsoft will actually wait until Windows 9 to relaunch the Start Menu in Windows, which means that the upcoming Windows 8.1 Update 1 will lack this particular feature.

Microsoft watchers Mary Jo Foley and Paul Thurrott talked about this improvement in Windows Weekly, explaining that people close to the development process hinted that the Start Menu wouldn’t arrive sooner than Windows 9.

This new version of Windows is scheduled to make its public appearance in April 2015 and in addition to a Start Menu, it’s also very likely to comprise a revamped Metro UI that would allow users to launch Modern apps on the desktop in their own windows.
