People familiar with the matter revealed that Microsoft could bring back the Start Menu at some point in Windows, most likely with the release of Windows 9, but it turns out that Redmond could do that a lot sooner.

According to a report posted by ZDNet and citing sources close to the development process, Windows 8.1 Update 1 could be the one to mark the comeback of the well-known feature, even though this seems very unlikely.

Mary Jo Foley writes that Microsoft’s main purpose right now is to make the operating system a bit more user-friendly, so the return of the Start Menu pretty much makes sense.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is scheduled to be officially unveiled later this year at the BUILD developer conference in San Francisco in April, at about the same time with the new Windows Phone 8.1.
