Microsoft will officially discontinue Windows 8.1 Preview on January 15, which means that all users who are still running this particular version of the operating system need to move to the stable build in the next two weeks.

Redmond officially introduced the new Windows 8.1 Preview in June at the BUILD developer conference as a means to allow developers to try out the first update for the core Windows 8 modern platform.

Windows 8.1 Preview brought quite a lot of changes, including a testing version of Internet Explorer 11, the browser that’s now available as a stable build to both Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 users.

Users who have installed Windows 8.1 Preview need to perform a clean install on Windows 8.1, so they will lose apps and settings during the updating process. Of course, they can very well go back to Windows 7 or to any other OS version on the market.
