Microsoft officially ended Windows 8.1 support yesterday, making Windows 8.1 Update mandatory for everyone running the previous OS version.

The company warned that PCs that aren't running Windows 8.1 Update would no longer receive updates and security patches unless they install this pack of improvements, but it turns out that a number of users are still getting new fixes via Windows Update.

A number of users told us today that their Windows 8.1 computers (which aren't yet running Windows 8.1 Update) received fresh updates this morning, even though the company clearly stated that it wouldn't happen due to the June 10 deadline announced last month.

Although this is clearly a minor glitch, Windows 8.1 users are still recommended to install 8.1 Update, mostly because all future improvements will be based on this particular OS version. The software giant says that everyone should actually deploy 8.1 Update, not only because it's mandatory, but thanks to the fact that it brings quite a lot of improvements, including options that are supposed to make the desktop a bit more familiar.

Windows 8.1 Update is still available for everyone running Windows 8.1 via Windows Update, so make sure that you deploy it as soon as possible in order to receive fresh patches in the coming months.
