Windows 8.1 might not be the most popular operating system on the desktop, but it’s quickly winning gamers’ hearts. At least, that’s what a new share of stats provided by gaming platform Steam is revealing.

Figures for the month of February 2014 show that while Windows 7 64-bit remained the most-used operating system on Steam with a share of 50.55 percent, Windows 8.1 64-bit increased its share by 1.41 percent to eventually reach 11.82 percent.

The 32-bit version of Windows 7 is still the second entry in the charts with 12.15 percent, while the 64-bit version of Windows 8 is fourth with 9.45 percent.

Windows XP, on the other hand, is quickly losing ground, and according to Steam data, it’s now powering 5.96 percent of the computers also running Valve’s gaming app.

Overall, the new stats clearly show a significant improvement for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, which means that gamers are finally discovering the benefits of Microsoft’s modern operating system.

Windows 8.1 has an overall market share on Steam of 12.18 percent, while Windows is now installed on 9.96 percent of computers also running the gaming app.

If you’re wondering where Mac OS X and Linux both are, stats show that their Steam usage is still low with 2.02 percent and 0.37 percent scores, respectively.
