Windows 8.1 is now prompting users who browse the Windows Store to add a payment method to their accounts, just in case they wish to purchase a shareware application.

A full-screen notification is now displayed at random times after launching the store and downloading a free application.

“Your free app is installing. To make it easier to buy apps later, you can add a payment method to your account now. You won’t be charged for free apps,” the message reads, while also displaying two different options to “Add info” or “Ask me later.”

Earlier today, Microsoft announced that it was merging the Windows Store and Windows Phone Developer accounts, in another attempt to bring more high-quality apps on its desktop and mobile platforms.

The company is also expected to merge the Windows Store and the Windows Phone Stores sometime in the near future, with people familiar with the matter saying that such a mix is likely to debut either in the next major update for Windows 8.1 or in Windows 9.
