As I reported to you not a long time ago, Microsoft signed a deal with Delta Air Lines to bring new-generation Surface tablets in a number of aircrafts, but the company has only now officially announced the deal.

According to the tech giant, Surface 2 tablets running Windows RT 8.1 will be given to pilots flying the Boeing 757 and Boeing 767 fleets, but all Delta cockpits are scheduled to get the device by the end of 2014.

“This intuitive device puts key information at their fingertips right when they need it. By eliminating paper, we’ll reduce clutter and minimize time spent looking for flight information allowing our pilots the opportunity for greater situational awareness in the air and on the ground,” said Capt. Steve Dickson, Delta’s senior vice president – Flight Operations.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft has started praising the device, saying that by adopting the Surface 2, Delta can reduce fuel usage by up to 1.2 million gallons per year (4.5 million liters) and cut paper usage by 7.5 million sheets annually, which is the equivalent of saving 900 trees each year.
