Microsoft officially launched Windows 8.1 Preview in June, with the company offering the testing version as either an update available in the Store or a stand-alone ISO free of all Windows 8 users.

Consumers who tried to install Windows 8.1 Preview using Microsoft’s ISOs experienced all kinds of problems, including an error whose code was 0x101-0x20017.

Even though no details have been provided till then, it appears that some users are still needed to deal with the same error, as Microsoft hasn’t yet released a workaround. The problem is that Windows 8.1 RTM is already available for download from MSND and TechNet, so some people might encounter serious difficulties when trying to deploy the OS update.

Basically, Microsoft recommends users to temporarily disable the Windows Firewall or any other security and/or anti-virus product that may be running on your Windows 8 computer, as they could block the installation process.

If that doesn’t work, starting the computer in clean boot (by disabling all start-up processes and services) and trying to install Windows 8.1 might do the job.

Either way, it’s still a pain in the neck, so let’s just hope that Microsoft fixes this until Windows 8.1 hits the market.
