Rumor has it that Microsoft could announce the official release date of Windows 8.1 stable as soon as today, as the company is gearing up for the Worldwide Partner Conference.

Win8China writes that the software maker is preparing several announcements for today’s event, including an important update on the public launch of Windows 8.1 RTM.

According to people close to the matter, Windows 8.1 is expected to reach the RTM stage in August, but the official release date will be postponed for a few more months. Microsoft is reportedly planning to launch 8.1 in October, just ahead of the holiday season.

At the same time, Steve Ballmer is also planning to unveil a major restructuring plan, as he intends to push the Redmond-based technology empire he controls closer to a devices and services giant.
