Windows 8.1 will soon hit RTM, so Microsoft is expecting the first Windows 8 update to perform much better and move more users to its new modern operating system.

Charles King, principal analyst at tech consultancy Pund-IT, told USA Today that Windows 8.1 could be a game changer for Microsoft, as it had what it took to stir up interest in the company’s new platform and to sell much better than its predecessor.

“If the redesign is successful, I expect we'll see a significant boost in new PC and notebook sales. If it isn't, no amount of executive shuffling will be able to save it,” he said. Windows 8.1 will hit the shelves by the holiday season and it packs lots of improvements, including a Start button that’s supposed to make the operating system a much more familiar working environment.
