Windows 7 continues to be the leading operating system worldwide, but as far as Steam users are concerned, Windows 8.1 64-bit is becoming a much more appealing platform for playing games.

Statistics provided by Valve for the Steam platform reveal that Windows 7 64-bit is now installed on 48.08 percent of computers running its application, down 0.84 percent from the month before. At the same time, Windows 8.1 64-bit increased its Steam market share by 1.26 percent to 19.01 percent.

The 32-bit version of Windows 7 is currently powering 11.85 percent of the computers used for playing Steam games, while Windows 8 64-bit is next with 7.86 percent.

The biggest drop was recorded this month by Windows 7 64-bit – 0.84 percent, while the biggest increase was posted by Windows 8.1 64-bit – 1.25 percent. Windows 8, Windows Vista, and Windows XP 64-bit also lost users in August 2014.

Overall, Windows is still powering no less than 95.47 percent of the computers running Steam, while Mac OS X is far behind with only 3.37 percent. Even though the number of Steam games for Linux is growing, the open-source platform lost 0.05 percent of the gamers last month, dropping to a share of 1.06 percent, with Ubuntu remaining the top distro for playing – 0.43 percent.
