It turns out that Microsoft does not want to bump the kernel version once again

Windows 8.1 is set to receive a major update in just a few months and a new report claims that when this new release gets to see daylight, the NT Kernel version will remain basically unchanged.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 brought the two most recent kernel updates from 6.1 to 6.2 for the first and from 6.2 to 6.3 for the latter.

This time, however, Microsoft won’t update the kernel version, Win8China is reporting, pretty much because this is just an update that would bring some improvements to the core operating system.

On another front, the Windows 8.1 2014 Update is expected to get leaked sometime next week, as Microsoft is apparently getting ready to ship it to OEMs for testing purposes. The official debut is expected to take place in April at the BUILD developer conference.
