Although Microsoft failed to support in any way past comparisons between development milestones of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 3, arguing that pre-gold builds are not fit for any sort of OS measuring
contest, it failed to hesitate in the least when it came down to throwing the pre-beta build of Windows 7 against its precursor. On the opening day of the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft delivered a boot time drag race between Windows Vista and Windows 7 pre-Beta Build 6801 Milestone 3.

The video embedded at the bottom of this article features a real-time comparison between the startups of Windows 7 and Windows Vista side-by-side. Jon DeVaan, Senior Vice President, Windows Core Operating System Division, revealed, “You're going to see that Windows 7 is going to startup several seconds faster than the Vista machine, and there are several things that we have done in Windows 7 to make sure that this comes true. A few examples are: loading device drivers in parallel, and another important one is that we created a mechanism to start services truly on demand, because by lowing the number of services that start during this scenario we can lower the memory pressure, we can lower the I/O pressure and we can deliver a superior experience”.

Microsoft, through the voice of Michael Fortin, Microsoft distinguished engineer and lead of the Fundamentals feature team in the Core Operating System group, indicated in the past that it was committed to the evolution of Windows 7 past Vista in terms of the startup time. In the testing lab, the Redmond giant is looking for 15 second boot times for Windows 7, which is of course a mark that will not be achieved in real life booting scenarios.

How whack.... is that presentation.... Look at the startup the same services were not running. Where was the windows sidebar in Windows 7? Windows Vista startup is really not the key to success. Some of the common issues such as file transfers and a new file system that should have been implemented into Windows 7 should have been in place? Where is the new file system? Vista is not completely crap just needs to be revamped and revised a little bit. But as for Windows 7. I think it will be another heart breaker for Microsoft.

It's sad when a key bullet for enhancements includes "We changed the default start-up sound"

Comment #4.1 by: Rami on 21 May 2009, 09:29 GMT

You know Microsoft has F'd up when a key change in their next "state of the art" OS is "Start sound changed"..

Microsoft is trying to push us to buy Windows 7. I think I will wait for about a year and see how it runs. All these tesst can be misleading. Few people are running Windows 7 at the moment and if we install it on 1 billion PC then we can get the true results.
After all it is just a platform. We have to buy Antivirus and other software packages!

This is very whack! Vista and 7 are so similar that it makes no sense to upgrade from XP. I know that I will stick with XP for many years to come!! Who cares if Microsoft stop supporting it, I am still using SP1 anyway as this is deff the most stable. Long live XP (I know it will!!)

Idk, i just heard about this not too long ago, i'm not a fan of xp after owning it for years, i run vista now, for the past year. it looks to me like windows 7 may have the same problem vista did and that's that computers made to run xp, are running vista, which makes vista seem to suck, newer computers can run vista WAY better, like the alienware one i have. Windows 7 also seems like it runs faster, i think it just didnt open up start-up programs which vista does automatically, so on 7 you'd have to (at least originally) open them up yourselves, making the time to "start up," longer. The windows 7 looks more like an upgrade for xp, with windows vista features. honestly i dont really like the "New" look it has, that task bar looks so stupid to me.

Hey guys i usually never write in forums but i have been doing some extensive research of my own. I have used MANY MANY different Operating Systems and so far out of the "Windows Family" XP in my opinion has much more reliable third party programs that fail to run on vista.
Vista was a good attempt but in my opinion Microsoft is doing everything the wrong way, similar to GM!
They need to stick to ONE Platform and work on that to make it better, Similar to Mac's approach!
Personaly im a windows fan for the simple reason that the specific programs i use work better with windwos
I will list pros and cons of XP, Vista, and Windows 7

XP Pros - Many Free Applications that ROCK!! with n o problems such as;
Peerguardian, Ghostwall, Infrarecorder, Panda Cloud Antivirus, Multivirus cleaner 2009, ccleaner to name a few.
Quicker loading on new PC's

XP CONS- ALL Games up to date work EXCEPT those that require the latest DirectX Update that will soon no longer be available to XP Users due largely because Microsoft will not be supporting XP much longer!

Vista pros - Its largely used because computers come shipped standard, so if u like it or not these will become the XP's eventually. What i mean is third party support will eventually be on par if not grater than XP's

CONS- for a modern OS (operating systems) it just isn't very efficient. i tested many Linux's and Ubuntu Linux or Ubuntu Linux Studio outperformed it by FAR. The downfall to LINUX is the "DIRECT X" Situation - YES IT can be emulated with a program called "WINE" but it will most likely be a headache for most people.

WINDOWS 7 - WOULD BE the best Idea Windows ever came up with IF ONLY it supported all Drivers. Im not bias but it truly is a sleek smooth running OS. It still has some issues that will surely be fixed but what doesn't with Microsoft [People are still fixing issues with Windows 2000 :S]
Windows 7 has a few useful shortcut to keep your computer neat and clean. its very hard to misplace a file unless u really don't know what the hell your doing! I find it very appealing and it seems to run a bit faster than vista. getting programs to run on the Beta or "Evaluation copy Build 7070" aren't hard at all since it seems to run whatever Vista runs, But not everything Vista runs just the majority of programs. It also has a BIG driver Data Base that windows provides for Drivers which is a good support considering the FINAL COPY inst even out in stores yet.

Overall If your a gamer and your playing games that are direct X 10 and LOwer requirements stick to WINDOWS XP SP3. IF your a movie freak and want to watch movies and blast music all hooked up to your HUGE FLAT SCREEN TV stick to Windows 7

If your a BIAS PERSON to Windows Vista then stick to that. XP AND Windows 7 are the best OS's in my opinion after many years of testing.

Im currently running XP largely because the security programs i have tested are more promising on XP than the ones tested on VISTA OR 7.
Thank you for reading!

I have got windows 7 and it supports all of my drivers.

If your a gamer buy windows 7 because xp can't run dx10 or above so really it's a obvious choice

Not sure if anyone has commented on this but here is some food for thought.

Windows 7 didn't have the same startup programs running as vista because....well....Windows 7 doesn't have the same startup programs. For starters, windows side bar has been removed. It won't be in Windows 7. You can still get the gadgets placed there but it's not part of the services anymore. Also, the idea of Windows 7 was to reduce the amount of services for performance.

Comparing the stability so far after the last RC, windows 7 outruns XP and Vista in all areas. It's faster, more reliable, more fun to use. They have removed a ton of features that ment nothing. If you are reading these comments, please, don't be afraid of Windows 7.

Windows 7 is truely what Windows Vista should have been. A lot of techs that I talk to refer to 7 as the Real Vista.

Go to Wikipedia and look up Windows 7. It has a list of added features and removed features. If you really feel the need to bash it, please don't just bash it. Go get the last RC of it, run it on a Virtual PC.

Windows XP can run fine on 512mb of RAM but 1GB to run smooth. Any more than that was icing on the cake.

Windows Vista said it needed 512mb - 1GB to run but anything under 2GB just won't cut it really. I'm running 3GB and I still want more RAM for some slowdown issues.

Windows 7's last RC I've been running on 1GB and I see absolutely no difference in speed between it and Windows XP. Yeah, I said it. I personally cannot wait until the market version comes out.

Some differences:
UAC has been revamed
Services have been revamped
Start Menu has been revamped
Desktop has been revamped
Control Panel has been revamped
Sidebar removed but gadgets are still available
Lockups reduced
Kernel has had work done on it for fine tuning

There are other things that have been worked on but I'm sure if you do some more research you'll see other reviews about Windows 7. I know, Vista scared a lot of people. Don't be afraid of Windows 7.

Summary:
If your bashing 7 before it's release, download the RC and try it or don't bother with the bashing.
If your bashing 7 because you've downloaded the RC or a beta version, what didn't you like about it?
If your bashing 7 because you've downloaded the RC but hated it because it was like vista, stop posting. The look is like vista but it's what vista should have been.

**Note**
Not 100% but I have read from multiple sources that Windows 7 may have Windows XP SP3 loaded into a Virtual PC for people that have programs that won't work on Vista/Windows 7 OS's. It won't be available for Home Premium users. Thats just hear say though so don't take it to heart.

Also, Wikipedia is not the best source for information as anyone on the web can edit the information on it. Use it as reference to features that way you can look them up from a crediable source as I have.

**End of Note**
