Analyst warns of compatibility problems during the upgrade

Windows 10 will have the exact same system requirements as its predecessor and it will be offered as a free upgrade for those running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 on their computers.

But with so many hardware configurations out there that are expected to be upgraded to Windows 10, many warn of compatibility issues that might be experienced during the process, as it’s a well-known fact that several Windows versions experienced similar problems when launched.

Richard Edwards, research analyst at Ovum, says that Microsoft is trying to avoid such problems with Windows 10 and that’s the role of the free upgrade reservation tool that it has recently launched on Windows 7 and 8.1.

And he does have a point here. In addition to enabling users to reserve their free upgrade to Windows 10, that little tool that so many people hate just because it stays forever in the system tray checks your system configuration to determine whether it can run the new operating system or not.

Unsupported systems aren’t getting the app

The application, however, is only available on computers that can run Windows 10, and Microsoft says that after July 29, the day when the new OS is projected to be unveiled, all users running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 should get the app in an effort to help them determine the Windows 10 compatibility level for their computers.

This way, they will be able to manually check whether their PC can run Windows 10 or not and prevent cases when the app can’t successfully recognize a specific configuration or evaluate it correctly.

During the upgrade, your apps and settings will remain intact, with Modern apps that you have already installed to be migrated to the new operating system and, if a new version is found, to be updated automatically from the store.

The whole process is supposed to run smoothly on all devices, and Microsoft has already tested this functionality with preview builds, but it remains to be seen if the same thing will happen with RTM too.
