Strong demand for the latest iterations of its main cash cows, Windows 7 and Office 2010, has generated record growth for Microsoft, according to the financial results announced by the company for the past fiscal quarter. In the fourth-quarter of 2010, the software giant’s revenue grew to $16.04 billion, namely a 22% increase over Q4 2009. For the quarter ended June 30, 2010 Microsoft reported an operating income of $5.93 billion, $4.52 billion in net income and diluted earnings per share of $0.51 per share. Comparing this quarter’s results with the same period of the past year, Microsoft managed to boost operating income, net income and diluted earnings per share by 49%, 48% and 50%, respectively.

“This quarter’s record revenue reflects the breadth of our offerings and our continued product momentum,” said Peter Klein, chief financial officer. “The revenue growth, combined with our ongoing cost discipline, helped us achieve another quarter of margin expansion.”

Although Office 2010 was only launched a month ago, the Redmond company is already reporting strong demand, on the heels of a successful launch. Windows 7’s success cannot be questioned at this point in time, over 175 million licenses already sold worldwide. The software giant also emphasized that divisions dealing with Windows Server, Xbox consoles and Bing also contributed to the increase in revenue.

“We saw strong sales execution across all of our businesses, particularly in the enterprise with Windows 7 and Office 2010,” said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer. “Our transition to cloud services is well underway with offerings like Windows Azure and our Business Productivity Online Services, and we look forward to continuing our product momentum this fall with the upcoming launches of Windows Phone 7 and Xbox Kinect.”

The end of Q4 2010 brings with it the end of Microsoft’s 2010 fiscal year. For the entire fiscal year the company reeked in revenue of $62.48 billion, no less than 7% more than the previous year.
