Upgrade notifications start showing up on PCs

This morning, Microsoft has started showing Windows 10 upgrade notifications on computers running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, and the company allows users owning PCs with any of these two OS versions to reserve their free copy of Windows 10.

The notification is powered by Windows Update KB3035583, and as we’ve told you in the past, it will show up from time to time on your desktop and try to convince you to upgrade to Windows 10.

Removing this patch basically helps you get rid of all the notifications, but if you are running Windows 7 or 8.1 and you plan to upgrade to Windows 10, you’d better reserve your free copy of the new OS operating system to download it as soon as it becomes available.

Microsoft says that if you reserve your free upgrade to Windows 10, “it will download once available and you can cancel your reservation at any time, and you’ll get a notification after Windows 10 is downloaded to your device. Install it right away or pick a time that’s good for you.”

To launch later this summer

Microsoft does not provide any sort of information regarding the release date of Windows 10, but the company explains that this is a limited-time upgrade offer and 3GB of storage space is required for the download.

Windows 10 is expected to reach RTM in June or July and launch in July or August. Windows Insiders will be the first to get it, followed by upgraders and only then by new users.

As you know, Windows 10 is offered as a free upgrade to computers Windows 7 and 8.1 during the first year after launch, but once upgraded, you will continue to get free updates and improvements during the entire supported lifetime of your device.

This offer is only available for consumers, so companies won’t get this notification on their computers. If you want to remove the notification and stay on Windows 7, make sure you uninstall KB3035583 from Windows Update and hide it to avoid being bothered again in the future.
