Microsoft is adapting the latest releases of Windows to the changes Estonia is going through as part of the process of becoming a member of the European Union and embracing the Euro.

In this regard, the Redmond company releases an update designed to change the currency symbol for Windows users in Estonia from the Estonian kroon (kr) to the Euro (€).

The refresh is available for manual download through the Microsoft Download Center, but it’s also served through Windows Update to customers in Estonia.

“After Estonia adopts the euro on January 1, 2011, the local currency code of Estonia changes from EEK to EUR,” Microsoft informs.

For the time being the software giant is updating only Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, but the promise from the company is that additional versions of Windows will follow.

“Currently, an update is only available for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Updates for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 will be released soon,” the company said.

A deadline for the release of this refresh for pre-Windows 7 versions of the operating system hadn’t been provided at the time of this article.

Still, the Redmond company is not letting users hand out to dry. In fact, the software giant has detailed the steps that customers can take in order to manually change the currency from kroon (kr) to the Euro (€).

Users of Windows Vista and Windows XP need to open up Control Panel and locate Regional and Language Options.

For Vista they need to “click Additional settings under the Formats tab. Click the Currency tab and then change Currency symbol from kr to €.”

For Windows XP users will have to “click Formats tab, and then click Customize this format. Click the Currency tab and then change Currency symbol from kr to €.”

In Windows 7 the same operation can be done in the Region and Language dialog box by selecting Additional settings under the Formats tab, and swapping the Currency symbol from kr to €.
