Windows 7 Tops 150 Million Sold Licenses at the Rate of 7 Copies per Second

The fastest selling operating system in the world is still going strong, according to statistics shared by Microsoft. Windows 7 has managed to pass the 100-million-sold-licenses mark in the first six months after the platform was launched on October 22nd, 2009. As of June 23rd, Windows 7 has broken another milestone, with Microsoft having sold over 150 million copies.

The successor of Windows Vista has shown incredible momentum since it hit the General Availability deadline. And eight months later, the operating system is still selling like hot cake. Microsoft has calculated that there are no less than seven copies of Windows 7 purchased by customers worldwide every second.

“We are excited to announce that Windows 7 has sold 150 million licenses to-date. As I’ve said before, Windows 7 is the fastest selling operating system in history with 7 copies of Windows 7 sold every second,” Brandon LeBlanc, Windows communications manager on the Windows Client Communications Team, revealed.

Early estimates of Windows 7’s success on the market indicated that Microsoft would be able to push approximately 300 million licenses by the end of 2010. As of June 23rd, the software giant is half way there, with just 150 million copies to go. Judging from Windows 7’s performance thus far, it seems a safe prediction to forecast that at least another 100 million licenses will be sold in the next six months.

Of course, one aspect that needs to be factored in is the success of Windows 7 with business users. “Between companies actively deploying and evaluating it, approximately 75% of enterprises are looking at Windows 7 for their organization. That’s amazing! And of course people continue to be excited about the features and benefits of Windows 7, and the PCs that our partners are delivering for Windows 7,” LeBlanc stated.
