Microsoft made available for download an updated version of its Windows Speech Recognition Profile Tool tailored to the next iteration of the Windows client. The official label of the tool delivers a hint at the actual functionality. The Windows Speech Recognition Profile Tool enables Windows users to perform operations such as backup and restore when it comes down to their speech profiles from the operating systems. At this point in time the tool is tailored to both Windows 7 and Windows Vista, Microsoft informs.

“The Windows Speech Recognition Profile tool - or WSR Profile tool for short - enables a Windows Speech Recognition user to easily back up and restore his or her speech profile. These procedures become handy when transferring a speech profile between computers, or when archiving complex speech profiles,” reads the tool's description. The Windows Speech Recognition Profile tool is designed to play nice with both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows; however, it is only available in English.

Just as is the case for Windows 7, the Windows Speech Recognition Profile tool continues to be in development. However, while Windows 7 is heading straight for release to manufacturing, the tool is only at the Community Technology Preview stage, the Redmond company informs. “It's an exciting time here in Redmond, as we're finally ready to release the CTP (Client Technical Preview) of the Windows Speech Recognition Profile tool (WSRProfile for short). WSRProfile allows you to back up and restore your speech profile. It's fast, and it's easy,” revealed Rob Chambers, Microsoft architect.

Microsoft made available for public download the first and only Release candidate of Windows 7 on May 5th, 2009. RC Build 7100 continues to be available for download even at this point in time. “Be sure to download the release notes as they contain useful information as well as user instructions. Please note that this is a "technical preview" version and as such there are a few known issues with the tool,” Chambers added.
