A new update available from Microsoft is designed to fix the incorrect parsing of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) graphics.

KB 2563227 was released earlier this week, and is available through both Windows Update and via the Microsoft Download Center.

According to the software giant, in specific scenarios, SVG graphics may not be parsed correctly.

“When you browse a webpage that contains a Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) graphic that has attributes that use large values, the SVG graphic may not be parsed correctly,” the Redmond company said.

Microsoft has already identified the source of the issue, which makes sense since a fix is already available for users.

“This problem occurs because XmlLite returns an out of memory error code 8007000e unexpectedly during the parsing of the SVG graphic,” the software giant explained.

Microsoft revealed that the KB 2563227 update is designed for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows 7 RTM, Windows Vista SP2 and their server counterparts, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and RTM as well as Windows Server 2008 R2.

The company did not mention if other browsers in addition to Internet Explorer 9 are affected. In fact, there’s no mention of any browser whatsoever, not even IE9.

But since Microsoft introduced SVG support with the advent of IE9, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when saying that the latest version of Internet Explorer is impacted by the parsing issues described above.

“SVG is an XML based format for drawing images and shapes. Because the images are vector based, they are not affected by zoom, and can provide an almost infinite quality when zoomed in,” the company notes.

“With Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft is proud to introduce support for the basic SVG feature set. The SVG support in Internet Explorer 9 is based on the SVG 1.1 (Second Edition) specification recommendation (for desktop browsers),” the company added.
