Updated continually by Microsoft, the latest version of the System Update Readiness Tool is designed to play nice with Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). In addition to playing nice with Windows 7 SP1, the System Update Readiness Tool also supports Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, as well as older versions of Windows, including Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 R2.

For those not familiar with the solution, Microsoft offers the System Update Readiness Tool in order to resolve what the company calls certain conditions which can cause the installation of updates to fail.

In addition to ensuring that Windows updates can be deployed without problems, the System Update Readiness Tool also contributes to making sure that third-party software can be installed successfully, with the same being valid for service pack upgrades.

The software giant is serving the System Update Readiness Tool automatically through Windows Update to all machines that can use it. But at the same time, end users can download the tool and run it manually on their computer.

All files located in these two directories: %SYSTEMROOT%\Servicing\Packages and %SYSTEMROOT%\WinSxS\Manifests will be verified by the tool.

On top of the files mentioned above, the System Update Readiness Tool also checks the following subkeys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Components, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Schema, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing.

“When the System Update Readiness Tool detects incorrect manifests, files, or registry data, it might replace the incorrect data with a corrected version,” Microsoft informs.

The System Update Readiness Tool comes to resolve issues that are introduced through the everyday use of Windows, impacting various system resources. Once it identifies problems affecting file data, registry data, or in-memory data, the tool will attempt to resolve them.

Users will be able to tell that some of their system resources have suffered inconsistencies once Windows begins misbehaving, failed updates being one of the symptoms.
