Deploying Service Pack 1 RTM on top of Windows 7 and Window Server 2008 R2 can require a few updates to be reinstalled in some scenarios, Microsoft has advised. According to the Redmond company, customers will know that reinstallation is required when they receive this message: "The following updates might need to be reinstalled."

The message is displayed only during the upgrading process of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 to SP1 RTM.

There are a total of three updates that can generate the notification, Microsoft revealed, namely:

983534 Performance of the DNS Server service keeps decreasing under a heavy load situation in Windows Server 2008 R2

"979350 SharePoint Workspace 2010 or Groove 2007 clients who are provisioned to Groove Server Relay in Windows Server 2008 R2 may experience a synchronization failure

"2406705 Some I/O requests to a storage device fail on a fault-tolerant system that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 when you perform a surprise removal of one path to the storage device."

It is because of the three updates that the message is displayed in the first place, the software giant explained.

None of the refreshes mentioned above are included into Service Pack 1 for either Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, a situation which generates the warning during the deployment process of the service pack.

“Installing SP1 in addition to these hotfixes will overwrite the hotfix. To prevent this, the Service Pack installer detects whether these hotfixes are installed on the computer.

“If any of the hotfixes are installed, the Service Pack installer blocks the installation of SP1,” Microsoft said.

The company also provided a solution for customers to deal with the issue described here. Essentially, they will need to revisit the KB articles associated which each of the updates, and redeploy the hotfixes using the latest release provided by Microsoft.

Subsequently, they’ll be able to move ahead with the SP1 RTM installation without any problems.
