A new update offered by Microsoft resolves an issue in Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 involving binary files in some USB drivers which would no longer update.

According to the software giant, customers started experiencing problems only after deploying Service Pack 1 to Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Users that are impacted by the issue can head over to the Download Center and grab the update.

I have included links to KB2529073 at the bottom of this article, to make it easier for Windows 7 SP1 customers to get the refresh.

“After you install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1), binary files in some USB drivers are not updated. For example, the Usbport.sys, Usbehci.sys, and Winusb.sys binary files are not updated,” Microsoft noted.

The company also offered additional details about the glitch, and it appears that not all customers are affected.

“This issue does not occur when you install USB drivers by using a custom description device information (.inf) file that was provided by the computer’s OEM.

“This issue does not occur if you are running a slipstream version of Windows 7 SP1 or of Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.”

According to the software giant, at fault is an issue related to the way that USB driver files are labeled.

“This issue occurs because both the Usbport.inf file and the Usb.inf file refer to the Usbhub.sys file. Therefore, Windows cannot copy the driver files to the destination location during the driver installation process,” the company explained.
