And at least 4GB of system memory

Microsoft has made available for download two updates designed to resolve issues related to data transfer failures in computers running Windows 7. According to the Redmond company, machines with Windows Server 2008 R2 can also be impacted by problems involving failed transfers of information over USB. However, the company underlined that customers must have computers with a specific hardware configuration in order for such issues to occur. The software giant explained that machines equipped with an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM were prone to problems when end users moved data over USB.

“Consider the following scenario: you have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. The computer has an NVIDIA USB Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) chipset. The computer has at least 4GB of RAM. You try to copy data from the computer to an external USB storage device. In this scenario, either of the following issues occurs: the computer stops responding. The copy operation stops,” Microsoft explained.

However, the scenario described above is not the only one in which end users could find that their Windows 7 computer stops while copying data over USB. Microsoft revealed that there were at least two other situations in which customers could stumble across this problem. “This issue may also occur when you are using USB devices other than storage devices. This issue may also occur if you perform other input/output (I/O) operations on the USB storage device. In this situation, the I/O operations fail,” the company added.

Microsoft has already produced two updates designed to resolve the problem, tailored to the 32-bit (x86) and the 64-bit (x64) versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 respectively. Users affected by data transfer issues over USB on computers featuring NVIDIA USB EHCI Chipset and 4 GB of system memory or more, can grab the updates from Microsoft and deploy them immediately.
