With PowerShell, Microsoft is providing an excellent tool for IT professionals that are administering IT environments. The latest iteration of PowerShell, version 2.0, is included by default into Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, but has also been backported to older releases of Windows. Via TechNet, Microsoft is providing a list with a range of PowerShell 2.0 cmdlets for IT admins that need a helping hand. The best thing about the Overview of Cmdlets Available in Windows PowerShell page on TechNet is that the Redmond company is also providing a short description for each cmdlets, simplifying the work for IT pros.

“Do you know all your cmdlets? You may know many cmdlets—even most—but with more than 250 cmdlets on a default installation of Windows 7 (with modules loaded), the number of cmdlets can be a bit overwhelming. Here’s a quick reference of the cmdlets available in Windows PowerShell 2.0, along with a short description of each,” Microsoft noted.

And just to be clear, PowerShell 2.0 has been available for download for a while now, in addition to shipping with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Customers running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 can now also grab PowerShell and take advantage of the evolution to version 2.0.

When backporting PowerShell 2.0, Microsoft made the decision to provide a comprehensive management solution to IT pros. In this regard, the company made the Windows Management Framework available for download. In addition to Windows PowerShell 2.0, the Windows Management Framework also contains the Windows Remote Management (WinRM) 2.00, and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 4.0. IT admins that integrate the Windows Management Framework with older releases of Windows can also take advantage of the new cmdlets for PowerShell 2.0.
