Windows 7 continues to be the world's number one operating system worldwide, but statistics provided by Valve for its Steam gaming platform reveal that in June 2014 this platform lost 1.12 percent of its users.

At this point, Windows 7 64-bit is powering 49.41 percent of the computers running Steam, while Windows 8.1 64-bit comes next with 16.19 percent and an increase of 0.85 percent.

The 32-bit version of Windows 7 is third with 12.21 percent, followed by Windows 8 64-bit with 8.01 percent and Windows XP 32-bit with 4.9 percent.

Unfortunately for those who are still running Windows XP 64-bit, statistics are showing that their number is quickly dropping, with only 0.27 percent of the computers running Steam currently powered by this particular operating system.

Windows XP no longer receives updates and security patches since April 2014, so the majority of users tried to upgrade to a different operating system, in most of the cases Windows 7. However, Windows 8.1 has also won some users, but there's no doubt that Windows 7 is the big winner of this transition.

As far as Linux is concerned, it's now powering 1.20 percent of the Steam PCs, with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit leading the pack with a share of 0.48 percent.
