PC gaming has almost always been tied to a generation of Microsoft's Windows operating system. Whether it was 95, 98 or the more recent XP or Vista, the Redmond giant was responsible for the main platform on which developers brought their video games. Windows XP has been and still is the preferred platform for gamers around the world, due to its low requirements and high degree of compatibility with almost all the titles that appear on the PC. But ever since Microsoft
introduced Vista, by saying that it would be perfect for any activity, including gaming, players have been somewhat reticent to upgrade to the company's new OS either because a lot of titles weren't compatible, or the system took up too much of the PC's resources, or due to the fact that it was filled with a lot of bugs or glitches that rendered games unplayable. But it seems that for gamers Windows 7 will be the best operating system, at least according to Microsoft's VP of the Interactive Entertainment Business for the EMEA region, Chris Lewis, who talked with GamesIndustry.biz about the future operating system. He went on to say that the resource hog that was Vista would be replaced with a much more robust and compatible OS, which would make the transcendence from XP to it almost seamless, while offering a lot of new features, including the hyped-up DirectX 11. “Windows 7 will be great for games, undoubtedly,” he said. “It's all good news - it's even more robust, it's quicker relatively, and the early testing cycles are proving very promising overall. I think it'll be nothing but good news for PC gamers, but we'll have more to say on that later on this year. Ultimately we're a Windows and PC company at heart, and that's not going to change, and the development on both platforms will remain central and important. The business ebbs and flows, and there will be times when we do more on one platform than the other, but they do co-exist very nicely, and as a company we're in a pretty unique position that we have a strong legacy on PC.” But what about you? Do you think that Windows 7 will bring a system that will be embraced by gamers such as yourselves? Will it make you change from XP or Vista to it? Leave us your opinion in the comment section below the article.

| Comment #1 by: Nicholas on 28 Feb 2009, 08:45 UTC | reply to this comment | I have been using Windows 7 for quite a while now, and I must say its performance is not much lower than that of XP, if it is at all. Sometimes it feels it's even higher. |
| Comment #2 by: #1 on 08 Mar 2009, 02:16 UTC | reply to this comment | Windows 7 has already been embraced by me for gaming. Solid performance. |
| Comment #3 by: Jack on 08 Mar 2009, 17:13 UTC | reply to this comment | Lets see what happen but still, its hype is great.........
& it'll be difficult for Microsoft to bring users from Xp to windows 7 ! |
| Comment #4 by: N@ZIM on 11 Mar 2009, 15:01 UTC | reply to this comment | Man ! Really Windows 7 is great ! I'm sure it'll be the best windows for pc gamers . CUZ when i installed the windows 7 in my pc , i saw my VGA is 512MB ! My actual VGA is 128MB ! Now i can play those games , which were not good in windows XP>>>>>>>> |
| Comment #4.1 by: Mohamad on 18 Mar 2009, 01:06 GMT | It's so nice , here I'm running vista on my notebook that has a video card Intel 915 - 128 Mb. The vista Operating system reduces it's shared memory into 122 Mb thus it can't run aero feature. But is't possible a 128MB Ram video card to be raised into 512Mb!! |
| Comment #4.2 by: Alex_Pc_nerd on 22 Sep 2011, 00:23 GMT | You still have 128MB of actual memory. What is happening is that Windows 7 reports the total memory: 512
VGA memory: 128
Video Memory: 0
And Shared system memory: 512-128=
So you still have the same but yes theoretically should run better with system memory |
| Comment #5 by: Mohamad on 17 Mar 2009, 00:27 UTC | reply to this comment | well, Vista has many compatibility issues. it 's heavy on pc, but I feel like sitting behind the pc running vista, it's so simple and nice... XP is in general light and compatible with the most hardwares, I didn't try windows 7. If windows 7 is in between, so of sure it gonna be my best choice! |
| Comment #6 by: MF3 on 17 Mar 2009, 18:38 UTC | reply to this comment | I think Windows 7 is not much better than Windows Vista, people should find alternative for PC and Windows, let's test Linux and Mac!
But Microsoft also still doing its best! I hope they are honest! |
| Comment #6.1 by: apaisios on 05 Feb 2011, 21:37 GMT | Go and play warhammer online and wow on linux noob or even dragon age.YES I PLAY GAMES AND I LOVE IT.I hate mac and most of all god * crapy linux...i hate typing comands i love USER INTERFACE SO SCREW u linux! |
| Comment #7 by: Daniel Angel on 18 Mar 2009, 02:34 UTC | reply to this comment | well lets see what gonna happen later , sorry Microsoft but i am not going to upgrade right away like i did when you released your Windows Vista unless i see all people recommending it i am not going to bother , waste of time and energy and money |
| Comment #8 by: SARcX on 19 Mar 2009, 12:42 UTC | reply to this comment | Though every one say that windows 7 is the best, in my computer the Directdraw acceleration and Direct3d acceleration is appears to be not available. I've onboadr AGP VGA.
Any one know a solution??? |
| Comment #9 by: Minhaj on 21 Mar 2009, 18:33 UTC | reply to this comment | i used windows 7 beta, i think it is a derivative of vista . there is another fact , i found that its resource requirement is very high as same as vista,it takes 68-75% of memory without running any program in my system having 1GB memory,i am frustrated about windows 7 as was about vista.
Now i am using XP pro,i've changed theme to a nice looking one and i am very much careful about viruses,as a result i am enjoying performance as like just after windows setup(i installed my XP many days ago).
I think XP is the best userfriendly OS in the most cases till now. |
| Comment #10 by: Sid Dunham on 22 Mar 2009, 01:38 UTC | reply to this comment | I am running Windows 7 and can not get Directx games to render correctly. The screen is blank or the game runs real slow. I have downloaded and installed the beta NVIDIA drivers for windows 7. That did not help. I don't think Windows 7 is going to be as great as everyone says it will be. |
| Comment #11 by: Naz on 26 Mar 2009, 10:08 UTC | reply to this comment | Not all games work on Windows 7 (i've tried and install many games and many turned me down). So how come Microsoft claims that Windows 7 is better than XP? But still, I like Windows 7 look and feel. It feels lighter and faster than Vista. For your info, I have 3 operating system in my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Hahahah... |
| Comment #12 by: Marksman on 01 Apr 2009, 20:59 UTC | reply to this comment | From what I've heard, Windows 7 is not much different to Windows vista. In terms of speed, yes it has changed but they had to compromise on something. One of them was copying speed. People were complaining that applications were running slow on Vista, so what they did was just give applications a higher priority than the operating system itself (background operations). Personally... I'll stick to XP, it's proved itself through 'n through. |
| Comment #13 by: rufus on 14 Oct 2009, 18:30 UTC | reply to this comment | Windows 7 is ok, it runs later games like a dream but with earlier games it has issues. I've only been running it for a few days and i've lost count of the amount of times something has stopped responding or crashed, it seems verry buggy at the moment, but then its early days... |
| Comment #14 by: lucifer on 19 Nov 2009, 07:09 UTC | reply to this comment | windows 7 is a joke when it comes to gaming, all I get is that this game is not compatible and something that is suppose to be so good is total crap, should have stuck with xp or kept my apple. What a joke. Nice job, give me back mt apple at least it works. |
| Comment #15 by: Johnny on 17 Dec 2009, 06:47 UTC | reply to this comment | Okay i have windows xp, of what i hear people say windows 7 is the best. . . . I want to upgrade but should i? is it really the best from that of the xp? |
| Comment #15.1 by: RAUNAK on 28 Mar 2012, 08:02 GMT | NO WINDOWS XP IS THE BEST AS FAR AS GAMING IS CONCERNED BUT FOR SPEED WIN 7 IS GOOD |
| Comment #16 by: tiger on 16 Jan 2010, 11:15 UTC | reply to this comment | I find it really amusing when Mac brings out something new, so therefore Microsoft feels it has to bring out something new aswell...!!!!
Why? .... A true scientist / or in this case a software developer will create something that is sturdy, reliable, functional, user-friendly, and most of all workable! ....That is what XP is!
You can fine tune something that is great, but as soon as you try to create a new OS, unless you can emulate the same resource specs as XP, then sorry, but it's downhill for Microsoft!
This is all about sales and profit unfortunately.
Has XP ever let anyone down more so than '95, '98, 2000, NT, VISTA, and 7, etc etc ?
XP was the pinnacle of Microsoft! ...Anyone will tell you that!
......then why fix something that's not broke? I'm sticking with XP till 2014.
p.s WHY do you think the military still uses XP and won't change!!!!! |
| Comment #17 by: xogamer on 29 Jan 2010, 04:50 UTC | reply to this comment | Since I upgraded to win 7 all my XP games have stopped working. I play act of war a lot and I can only play for a couple of minutes before the games freezes. This is just one example. It it the same story will all the games. I regret upgrading, will be going back to XP where everything worked. |
| Comment #18 by: Gerald The PC Wiz on 24 Apr 2010, 03:11 UTC | reply to this comment | Everyone out there, I have an important announcement. I was a hardcore XP fan and have recently installed windows 7 on another partition. It is supreme. If you've got a 3.0GHz cpu or above its probably going to be a friggen awesome experience. |
| Comment #19 by: Magda on 02 May 2010, 09:07 UTC | reply to this comment | Well. I bought a new computer to get better performance for my games. I bought a Vista computer, and was recommended to install Windows 7. And yes. Windows 7 is better than Vista, but it is terrible next to XP. My old computer is abolut 5 years old, but still with tha few ram and low grafics, I could play A LOT more games on the XP machine! As a gamer, I am pretty much dissapointed with Windows 7, and is going to downgrade to XP when I find the drivers needed for my computer to work with XP.
With 4Gb ram, 1Tb harddisk and 1Gb videocard, and upcoming XP - i is going to be a great gamers PC |
| Comment #20 by: decoy on 10 Jul 2010, 07:52 UTC | reply to this comment | i still like xp....and i think it is much better for games..win7 can play only the newest games with good performance win xp ca play the oldest and the newest games with same performance..with win7 (for me win7 and xp are the same) |
| Comment #21 by: Robert Macrae on 05 Aug 2010, 03:27 UTC | reply to this comment | Windows 7's 'compatibility" helper is a joke. I spent a couple of days trying to get a game from new world computing (mm8) through their steps and it just failed repeatedly. This has happened with a couple differant games that played fine on 98/me/xp. Why not just add an emulator instead of wasting our time with a silly process where failure is attended by the dullwitted epitaph "it's incompatible." Really? ns. |
| Comment #22 by: LevyRM on 31 Aug 2010, 18:27 UTC | reply to this comment | At this time even after one year of using Win7, I am still not able to play older WinXP games on Win7. Games play great on WinXP but wouldn't even install correctly most of the time in Win7. Help.... |
| Comment #23 by: Steve.b on 11 Sep 2010, 21:58 UTC | reply to this comment | I have tried 7, even surprised myself by liking it, was even considering replacing XP for good. Then i logged onto World of Warcraft, places where i used to get an easy 60 fps had suddenly dropped to 15 or less. And that's with all my drivers updated for Win 7. My set up plays Wow with no problems on XP, but not good enough for Win7. So i am staying with the trusty XP. |
| Comment #24 by: hello on 21 Sep 2010, 07:32 UTC | reply to this comment | Hey guys, what about LINUX!? That one's free!
Oh wait, no one cares to support it. |
| Comment #25 by: Kmiller1610 on 28 Sep 2010, 01:25 UTC | reply to this comment | I run a lot of Lan games, under both XP and Windows 98. Over the past 3 years,a number of titles stopped running properly under XP: Serious Sam 1 and 2, Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed, Battlezone 2. I found that if I loaded older drivers, these programs would work. But Windows 7 runs them right out of the box. I was quite surprised. |
| Comment #26 by: king on 25 Oct 2010, 17:43 UTC | reply to this comment | can games from XP or windows 2000 work good on windows 7????? |
| Comment #27 by: gloyne on 05 Nov 2010, 02:53 UTC | reply to this comment | windows 7 sucks cant even play old xp games on it totally waste of money for me as i use my pc for gamng 2/10 for me! |
| Comment #27.1 by: MadatMicrosoft on 27 Nov 2010, 06:16 GMT | Well for those of us who are looking to buy a new computer we HAVE no choice, Windows 7 is on there! No XP...this sucks...my current computer is too old to play my computer games without freezing and lag, and the new computers have Windows 7 which makes the XP games useless! Oh all the money I wasted on games....I am mad and disappointed.
BRING BACK XP!!!!!!! |
| Comment #28 by: Serp on 17 Dec 2010, 07:36 UTC | reply to this comment | If you have a high end Nvidia graphics card Windows 7 has a pretty high likelihood of crashing within 30-45 minutes of play in many of the more intensive games.
If you don't have a high end Nvidia card, then, well, you're not really a gamer to begin with so why are you weighing in? Windows 7 is awful for gaming but a few games only run on it vs. XP, so some serious gamers will dual boot.
The other advantage of course is DX11, but for most people better performance and stability are a better idea. Windows 7 is still pretty much a broken system for gaming. Windows 7 is generally better for other tasks, but for a gamer, you'd want to stick to XP.
Also if you are really a gamer, you'd build your own rig anyway, so the new computer issue is moot. Most hardware vendors still support XP, and XP Pro SP3 System Builders version is still being sold, and is the one you ought to get. |
| Comment #29 by: TURBOPC on 01 Jan 2011, 21:06 UTC | reply to this comment | after 3 or 4 try with win7 this is the worst os ever
i try it for dx10 and dx11 after 1h trying to install driver and other software i was so tired to watch the waithing circle then i bring this * back to the store and reinstall the ultimate os ever XP at least it let you decide wath you want instead of wath he think you want
anyway Microsoft's VP just wanna sell this * so he said wath ever it take so you buy it
im not the kind of stupid custumer * belive wath they said instead of wath i see
and for the win 7 happy user for any task you ask win 7 XP WILL DO IT AT LEAST 2X FASTER with no bug ;)
if Microsoft's give the dx 10 and 11 for xp that will be so great
already got it in my dream :D
IM 42 and i use the first windows named WINDOWS in 86 it was a lttle crud and i can sai every windows they came out with was better and better until vista (big flop) win 7 is a lttle better but not for me |
| Comment #30 by: Mike on 08 Mar 2011, 17:18 UTC | reply to this comment | It seems so but that's because Micro Soft is trying to corner the market on games period. XP still runs far more games than WIN7 ever has. And so far even with setting adjusted and various other changes WIN7 cannot do justice by any of the most popular games. |
| Comment #31 by: Mike on 08 Mar 2011, 17:29 UTC | reply to this comment | I am running a high end board with X6 1100T amd processor, 8 gig ddr3 ram, dual boot system with XP and 7, XP beats 7's bench marks without even breaking sweat. And besides all DX versions (complete library is loaded.) to include 11 in the xp os. |
| Comment #32 by: MAX KADY on 24 Apr 2011, 07:08 UTC | reply to this comment | WHEN MY 2002 DELL LAPTOP FINALLY DIED I HAD ALL THESE GREAT GAMES THAT I HAD MASTERED, VIETCONG, BATTLEFIELD VIETNAM, AND MANY MORE, SO I BOUGHT A NEW TOSHIBA LAP, BUT WITH WINDOWS 7 XP, ALL MY GAMES WONT EVEN INSTALL, BECAUSE THIER WINDOWS 98, AT LEAST 300.00 IN GAMES WASTED! HAD I KNEW THIS, I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT A REFURBIHED WINDOWS 98, CANNOT FIND ANY WARGAMES FOR WINDOWS 7,YOU MUST DOWNLOAD ANY GAME THAT HAS A BULLET IN IT! AND IF YOUR LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND A GAME W/7 XP TS SOME GOOFY PIRATE GAME FOR 5 YEAR OLDS, ONE GUY FROM A PC GAME SHOP TOLD ME IN THE FUTURE YOU WONT BE ABLE TO BUY GAMES, EVERYTHING WILL HAVE TO BE DOWNLOADED, I DONT LIKE DOWNLOADING, I WISH I COULD FIX MY W/7 TO PLAY W/98 THERES STILL GOOD GAMES OUT THERE(W/98) BUT THEY WONT BE AROUND LONG. |
| Comment #33 by: EST on 26 Apr 2011, 03:47 UTC | reply to this comment | I have win 7 pro and have not been able to play one game one it except shockwave. I even bought a game for win 7 and it crashes. I'm taking this new computer and having them put xp on it. I HATE 7!!!! |
| Comment #34 by: Wolfleader on 19 Jul 2011, 14:22 UTC | reply to this comment | Windows 7 have better perfomance than XP. However, old games like Counter Strike 1.6(Open GL), Empire Earth 1, the first red alerts, pacmans and so on, games more than 3 years old generally, cant run in 7. I prefer XP all the way. I had never had a problem with XP. Reliable system and easier to work on. | |
