Windows 7 Cannot Burn 46GB of Data to a BD-R Dual Layer Disc or 23GB to a BD-R Single Layer Disc

Windows 7 users that attempt to burn large amounts of data onto Blu-Ray discs can come across some issues, Microsoft confirmed

officially.

It appears that the issue is related to the erroneous way in which Windows Vista’s successor estimates the write capacity of a Blu-Ray disc.

As a direct result, burn operations to BD discs will result in failures in specific scenarios, with Windows 7 displaying the following error message:

"The disc wasn't burned successfully. Make sure that you have the latest firmware for your CD or DVD burner installed, and then try again."

According to the software giant, this happens when users try to make the best out of all the storage space that a Blu-Ray disc theoretically offers them.

“When attempting to burn 46GB of data to a BD-R Dual Layer disc, or 23GB to a BD-R Single Layer disc in master mode, the process fails,” the Redmond company explained.

Microsoft has already identified the issues and notes that Windows 7 is at fault. “This problem occurs because Windows 7 does not calculate the write capacity of BD-R correctly,” the software giant said.

But despite the glitch residing in Windows 7, the Redmond company is not offering an update or even a hotfix designed to resolve the issue.

In fact, according to information from Microsoft Support there’s really no way to fix the problem, at least not for the time being. But there is somewhat of a workaround:

“To work around this issue, do not attempt to write more than 22GB of data onto a BD-R Single Layer disc or 45GB for a BD-R Dual Layer disc,” the company said.

It appears that upgrading Windows 7 by installing Service Pack 1 (SP1) won’t resolve this problem. Perhaps Microsoft will deal with the Windows 7 Blu-Ray burn bug in Windows 7 SP2, but there’s really no way of telling at this point in time.
