At the MidMarket CIO Summit held in Redmond, Washington, on April 6, 2009, Microsoft's COO made a few intriguing statements regarding the security standpoint of Windows Vista. According to the man, Microsoft's latest achievements in fighting security are perfectly translated into Windows 7, providing the latter with everything it needs to beat Mac OS X Leopard and Linux in security.

Remarks made by Kevin Turner, chief operating officer for Microsoft, reveal that, “Vista today, post-Service Pack 2, which is now in the marketplace, is the safest, most reliable OS we've ever built. It's also the most secure OS on the planet, including Linux and open source and Apple Leopard,” he said at the MidMarket CIO Summit held in Redmond, Washington. “It's the safest and most secure OS on the planet today,” Turner emphasized.

“Everything that we've learned in Vista will be leveraged in Windows 7, but certainly when we broke a lot of the compatibility issues to lock down user account controls, to lock down the ability to manipulate states and all the things, that was a very painful process for us to grow through, but we had to do it,” Microsoft's COO further explained.

“And the reason that Windows 7 will be successful is because of the pain we took on Vista. Because from a compatibility standpoint, if it works on Vista, it will work on Windows 7. If it doesn't work on Vista, it won't work on Windows 7,” he declared.

Mighty bold statements coming from Mr. Turner! Just to make sure we got this right: at this particular moment in time, Microsoft trusts that Vista is the safest, most reliable OS the company has ever built. Not only that, but, currently, it's also the safest on the planet, according to Turner.

And how exactly does Microsoft know what Apple has in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard that can't beat Windows 7 in security, may we ask?

Vista is much more secure than Mac OS X Leopard, and while nobody can say for sure until they're both released, it seems pretty natural that Win 7 would be more secure than Snow Leopard.

What have you seen from Snow Leopard that makes you think it will be as secure as even Vista, much less Windows 7?

Agreed. Vista and Win7 ARE more secure. They both run conficker as securely as any Windows OS... LOL

Microsoft won't be able to have a stronger system until they move to a unix based system. The only reason os x was hacked at the pwn2own was because the administrative password was given. You can't receive anything on a unix based system unless you go to a specific site, download something, but all serious threats require an admin password. Windows is not. I do, however prefer windows 7 to previous windows os's. I do mainly use OS X but on an old 64 bit system I own i installed the beta Windows 7 and the computer ran faster than xp ever did and utilized the 64 bit processor much better. Don't buy into one man's statement though wait for facts.

This is great I use a mac and have windows 7 beta on my laptop this means then if is even more secure than osx like steph said .can uninstall all the anti virus programs i have installed as won't need them. like on a mac. Think this will be bad news for companies like norton though

I have both windows 7 RC and leopard. I have to be honest and say I prefer Windows 7 over Leopard. I hope SL is a big improvement for competitions sake.

i've been using windows since 1995 i have Vista 64bit and leopard 10.5.6 on my PC running hackintosh, when i compare the two i think windows vista 64 bit is faster then OSX and more secure, you also get alot more options using windows lets say you wanted to customize the menu change the color for example you could easily do that with windows. In OSX you would have to find third party software to do that. MAC is way over priced they use $800 laptop hardware and install osx on it and sell it for $2500 thats crazy.

os x is way more secure the windows.. It doesn't even need the firewall turned on, while vista constantly asks you for permission for every single thing and needs all these virus scans running because of poor design. Do yourself a favor and switch to mac if you havn't already, thats my advice.

The only reason OS X appears to be secure is because of its small market share, so nobody wants to make an OS X virus. If mac market share ever gets high enough, there will be an outbreak of mac viruses, and microsoft will laugh. Honestly, OS X is less secure than both linux and windows, but because windows in the primary target for viruses, microsoft keeps it more secure than the competition.
