The fastest selling operating system in history is now being used by almost twice as many customers than its predecessor.

According to statistics share by Janco, Windows 7 has grown to a massive 17.39% of the OS market. Meanwhile, the market share of Windows Vista has been falling with no signs of stopping.

The successor of Windows XP is now down to just 10.78% of the platform market, with Windows 7 being the main architect of Vista’s market share erosion.

At the same time, Janco revealed that Windows 7 has also been enjoying an acceptance Rate that is approximately twice that of Vista.

At the end of June 2010, Microsoft noted that it had sold in excess of 175 million licenses of Windows 7, and that the operating system was selling at a rate of more than 7 copies per seconds.

June was also the month in which by Microsoft’s own estimates Windows 7 surpassed Vista in terms of market share, for the first time since the platform’s GA.

The forecast was confirmed by Internet Metrics company Net Applications, which indicated that Windows 7 is indeed the second most used operating system worldwide, as of July 2010.

There are additional conclusion from Janco’s August 2010 Browser and OS Market Share Study, including:

“- Microsoft owns the OS market in the desktop market. Currently over 94% of all desktop and laptop systems that use the internet are some form of the Windows OS

- Users, who have tried Windows 7 are pleased with it and "highly recommend" it. The one exception is the 64-bit Version which has some issues associated with the 64-bit version of IE.

- Users will continue to move to Windows 7 from Vista. Those users who were on Windows XP will move if their hardware will support it or they will wait until they get new equipment with the new OS pre-installed. We predict that by this time next year Windows 7 should have the same OS market share as Windows NT and that Vista will be a distant memory.” Windows 7 RTM Enterprise 90-Day Evaluation is available for download here.
