Project Spartan will launch as Microsoft Edge

Microsoft has just announced at BUILD 2015 that its new browser in Windows 10 will be called Microsoft Edge, thus dropping the Spartan moniker that has been used for the technical preview.

“It is a browser that people will use to get things done, it's a browser that has Cortana built-in and helps you get stuff done,” Microsoft's Joe Belfiore has said at BUILD.

Project Spartan was just an internal codename for the new browser, Belfiore has emphasized, adding that Microsoft Edge is built from the ground up to make browsing the web faster and more secure. Interestingly, Internet Explorer has always been criticized for being too slow and insecure, so Microsoft is trying to tackle these complaints with the new Edge browser.

On the other hand, by naming the new browser Microsoft Edge, the software giant disappoints many of its users who asked the company to keep the Spartan designation in Windows 10, but this way everyone would know that there's a new engine, a new interface, and new features, the company says.

Microsoft Edge will also support extensions and this feature will be released even before Windows 10 reaches RTM. Users enrolled in the Windows Insider program will thus be able to test them before the new OS comes out, Belfiore has added.

Basically, Microsoft Edge browser should be able to run any Chrome extension, but some might require additional tweaking if something doesn't work as expected. But in most of the cases, Microsoft Edge was designed to use any Chrome extension from the store.

Microsoft Edge will be part of the next Windows 10 preview expected in the coming days along with extension support and slightly revamped UI.
