Windows 10 Won't Require Denim on Lumia Devices

Microsoft started the Lumia Denim rollout in December, but even though we're already in February, there are some devices that are yet to get the new firmware, which makes the wait extremely frustrating for those who want to get Lumia Camera and Hey Cortana on their devices.

But some were also worried that, because their devices haven't received the Denim update, they might not be ready to install the Windows 10 for phones preview, which is expected to be released sometime this month.

This won't be the case, Microsoft guarantees, as Windows 10 for phones can also be installed on devices running Cyan, which means that pretty much all Windows Phone 8.1 models can be upgraded to the new OS version.

Also working on 512 MB devices

Head of the Windows Insider program Gabriel Aul has said in a tweet that "Denim is not a requirement to upgrade," confirming that even Cyan devices can deploy Windows 10 for phones preview.

What's also very important is that the preview build of Windows 10 will also support 512 MB devices, so low-end Windows Phone models can also run the new operating system very smoothly.

Aul has confirmed that Windows 10 works like a charm on Lumia 635, pointing out that, even though some features are indeed missing on 512 MB devices, because of their obviously limited hardware capabilities, the Windows 10 experience is still a thing everyone should want to get on their device.

There are no specific release details available right now, but it might seem that the company is getting ready to roll out the preview sometime this week, as work on the testing bits is almost complete.

And yet, not everyone would get the preview from the very beginning, as the company says that only a few devices would be upgraded to Windows 10 as part of the initial release. This most likely means that flagships would get the Windows 10 treatment, while less popular devices would only receive it at a later time, as development reaches a more advanced stage.
