14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft is working to make Windows 10 available on both PCs and phones, so a wider range of resolutions need to be supported. A slide presented by Microsoft at WinHEC conference in China shows that Redmond is indeed improving resolution support in Windows 10, so the new OS would work with the majority of the devices on the market. Including some that do not exist yet.
The paint hasn't dried yet on 4K monitors, but Microsoft is already looking beyond them, so it's now developing support for 8K displays.
The slide revealed in China shows that Windows 10 for PCs and 2 in 1s will require a resolution of at least 800x600 pixels, with a minimum display size of 8 inches.
For 4K displays, Windows 10 will require an 8-inch or bigger screen, while those who want to make full use of the 8K support will need a 27-inch or bigger monitor.
Required screen sizes for phones
The same slide also provides us with a quick glimpse into the requirement sheet for phones designed to run Windows 10, but also for small tablets that would be powered by the very same operating system.
According to Microsoft information, the smallest screen that can be installed on these devices must be 4 inches, but for superior performance, the company recommends a 4.5-inch display. The minimum resolution, however, must be 480x800 pixels, while those who hope to get 4K support on their handsets would have to go for a device with a 6-inch screen or bigger.
Windows 10 will be designed to run on a wide variety of devices, including those included in the IoT effort, but Microsoft is yet to provide full requirements for even smaller gadgets, such as wearables.
But the company has already confirmed that Windows 10 will fully support the IoT concept, so expect more information on this to be provided very soon, as work on the new operating system continues.
